A logistics centre where a structural engineer can unleash his creativity

As a structural engineer, we are involved in the first mechanised distribution centre of supermarket chain Albert Heijn. From this Albert Heijn distribution centre in Zaandam, more than 300 shops are supplied with fresh and perishable products twice a day.

"This distribution centre contains a unique construction, this due to vibration requirements from mechanisation"

The warehouse has a fully automated picking system. The automated process is in the hands of 28 robots, two in each of the 14 robot cells. The high-bay pallet warehouse has seven cranes. The shuttle warehouse has 137,000 locations for 122,600 trays (equipped with moveable floors) and 8.5 kilometres of conveyors. The total built-up area is 60,000 m2. 1.7 million packages are processed every week. With this almost fully automated distribution centre, Albert Heijn is ready for the future.
