A table construction for Mammoet in Schiedam

OUR PARTNER (ALSO CLIENT FOR THIS PROJECT) DAIWA HOUSE WAS COMMISSIONED BY DUTCH MULTINATIONAL Mammoet TO CREATE A CANTEEN AND SHOP. PELECON IS THE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER FOR THIS PROJECT, WHICH IS CHALLENGING DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF TRADITIONAL AND ELEMENTARY CONSTRUCTION. THE TRADITIONAL PART CONSISTS OF A TABLE STRUCTURE ON THE GROUND FLOOR, WHICH FORMS THE ROOF FOR THE CAR PARK, THEREBY TAKING UP MINIMAL SPACE ON THE PLOT. ON TOP OF THIS TABLE CONSTRUCTION, THERE WILL BE TWO FLOORS OF UNIT CONSTRUCTION CONSISTING OF MOVIX FLOORS.

Not only the combination of traditional and unit construction and the table construction, but also the footbridge is a challenge of this project. This footbridge will soon connect the existing building (De Bolder) with the new building. Our task was to make the calculations for the entire building and to draw the traditional part. Here, we determined the profiling of the table structure and the Movix units, specified the stability provisions and calculated the foundations.

STRUCTURAL CHALLENGES FOR PELECON
The movix system will be placed on the table structure. By using reinforced concrete columns, we were able to make this structure “puddle” fire-resistant without additional cladding. Parking is possible under the table, and the columns also had to be calculated for impact loads. Another challenge was that the exact dimensions and position of the walkway are not yet known. This can only be measured once the new building is in place. Finally, we are dealing here with the diabolo shape of the De Bolder building. That means it is round, but also falls in at an angle at the connection.

Structural engineers Bastiaan and Evelijn are satisfied with the result of our advice and will also stay on top of this assignment during realisation for any reconsiderations. After all, our work does not end when the drawings and calculations are handed over.
